This pizza sauce is fresh, easy, and delicious.  In addition to pizza, it makes a great dipping sauce for garlic bread.  No need to remove the skins on the tomatoes in this recipe, making it a snap to cook.  Look for a tomato paste that is low in sodium.  We used a tomato paste with 20 mg sodium in a two tablespoon serving.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium ripe tomatoes, diced
  • 1 can low sodium tomato paste
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small yellow onion, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon white sugar

Method

Step 1

Saute the garlic and onion in olive oil over medium heat for 2-3 minutes.

Step 2

Add tomatoes and bring to a simmer. Simmer for 5-6 minutes. Add dry spices.

Step 3

Stir in tomato paste. Remove from heat. Allow to cool slightly before using.
