Looking for a good reason to reduce the sodium in your diet?  No problem.  We’ve got six of them.

For Your Heart

It is well-known that excess salt in a person’s diet can lead to high blood pressure.  This condition, also called hypertension, can lead to heart attack and stroke.  But don’t take our word for it.  The Harvard School of Public Health’s website, the Nutrition Source, makes a rather compelling argument for salt reduction.  Read all about it here.

You’ll Feel Healthier

We challenge you to try reducing your sodium intake to 1,500 mg of sodium (or less) per day for one week.  Notice any difference in the way you feel?  It’s no coincidence.  When we ingest excess amounts of sodium, or bodies retain water to dilute the sodium concentration in our bloodstream to bring it back down to a healthy level.  Water retention in turn makes us feel bloated uncomfortable.  A reduced sodium diet can help you to always feel your best.

For Your Waistline

No, we’re not trying to claim that reducing sodium in your diet alone will cause you to lose weight.  Sodium itself does not have any caloric value.  However, keeping a watchful eye out for the sodium content of your foods means you’ll constantly be checking the nutrition facts of the things you eat.  You’ll have a greater awareness of the nutritional value of your snacks and meals, which in turn helps you to make smarter food choices.

Say Goodbye to Processed Foods

Processed and prepackaged foods are generally high in salt, which is an inexpensive way for food suppliers to add flavor to food, and is also used as a low-cost preservative.  A reduced sodium diet is high in fresh fruits and veggies, which are loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that your body needs.  In addition, when you prepare your meals from fresh ingredients, you know exactly what’s in the food you’re eating- and knowledge is power!

Do it For a Loved One

Any of life’s challenges can be easier if you have somebody to go through it with you.  If you have a friend or loved one that has been placed on a low-sodium diet under doctor’s orders, help them out by going low sodium too.  This is a great way to show love and support that will help them to change their life forever.  Need we say more?
